Specific Gravity Temperature Correction Calculator
What this calculator does
The Specific Gravity Temperature Correction calculator adjusts a hydrometer specific gravity reading taken at a non-standard temperature to the equivalent reading at the calibration temperature. Hydrometers are typically calibrated to 60°F (15.6°C), and readings taken at other temperatures must be corrected for accuracy.
How to use it
Enter the observed specific gravity reading and the temperature of the sample. The calculator returns the corrected specific gravity at the standard calibration temperature. Use a calibrated hydrometer and an accurate thermometer for reliable results.
Calculation notes
The correction accounts for the thermal expansion of the liquid being measured. The correction formula is based on the density change of water and aqueous solutions with temperature. For spirits with significant alcohol content, the correction may be less precise than for water or wort. Always use the corrected value for subsequent calculations such as ABV or Brix conversion.
